Design for Social Responsibility

Availability of Basic Sanitation

We design a solution to cater to an individual’s every need. While we focus on the micro concerns, do we pause and think of the macro concerns? Designing is creating and with creation comes responsibility.

As a part of our module, we had to work on the given the subject, "Availability of Basic Sanitation". We were a group of five girls who worked on building up a toolkit for educating young girls about menstrual hygiene. To put this into action, we conducted a workshop at a school in Uvarsad, Gandhinagar.

Design for social responsibility focuses on showing solidarity and support for social, environmental, and justice issues. Through visual communication design, we had to educate and bring a change in the society or community in the sector, “Availability of Basic Sanitation.”

What is Sanitation?

Types of Sanitation:

Brief:

This is defined as the use of improved sanitation facilities that are not shared with other households. A lower level of service is now called "limited sanitation service" which refers to use of improved sanitation facilities that are shared between two or more households.

Our research began with going to a village near our university. In order to understand the problems, it was necessary to go and empathise with the people in the village. We went to three schools and spoke about basic sanitation and realised that awareness regarding “menstrual hygiene” lacked.

Girls in the village were unaware about periods until they got it, which is very overwhelming and can be daunting at times. Moreover, creating awareness regarding personal hygiene was needed.

Aim:
Our motive was to create and spread awareness regarding menstruation and menstrual hygiene amongst girls between the age group of 12-14 years.

Ways to create awareness:

• Print collaterals
• Activities
• Souvenirs
• Sessions

The illustrations and the deliverables will follow  a monochromatic colour scheme.

Vector illustrations following no borders, solid colours using shapes as the base.

  • Brochure

In order to have the information handy, we decided to create a brochure. This contained pictorial information as well text written in hindi, making it easier for them to read and understand.

  • Game Activity

Since only information would be difficult at times, we curated a game, rather a fun activity for the girls.

The session started with
a presentation explaining about Menstruation and
it’s importance.
The entire presentation along with speech was in
Hindi.

To make it easier for them to understand, we conducted an activity (curated by us) which was not only educational but also fun.

In the end, a Q&A round was played after the fun activity to clear any doubts.

- During the seminar we asked the girls if they knew what periods are and 80% of them were unaware of it.

- When you get your periods for the first time it can be quite daunting and confusing, by educating them about it we might help them take better care of themselves during the time.

- Our tool kit consisting of a brochure, one fun activity and a couple of badges will also help this school and others to conduct similar seminars and educate other girls in the future.
